🌎 Americas travel risk: country-by-country safety guide

54 countries in Americas, with 54 canonical country files currently marked indexable. Quality and review depth vary, so each page labels its confidence and may fall back to the official-advisory, GDACS disaster-alert, CDC health-notice, and country-baseline layers where city data is incomplete.

How safe is it to travel in Americas?

The Americas run from the Arctic to Patagonia and the risk picture is just as wide. Canada and most of the United States are low-baseline-risk with world-class infrastructure; the main caveats are US city-specific crime pockets and natural-hazard seasons. Latin America is where most preparation pays off: petty and organized crime concentrate heavily in specific neighborhoods and after dark, while the iconic destinations themselves (Mexico’s resorts, Peru’s Inca trail, Patagonia) are visited safely by millions each year with the right awareness.

Common traveler risks across Americas

  • Neighborhood-level crime gradients are extreme in Latin American cities — the safe and unsafe districts can be a few blocks apart.
  • Express kidnapping and ATM/taxi scams in some major cities — use registered ride-hail and bank-lobby ATMs.
  • Natural hazards: Atlantic hurricane season, Pacific earthquakes and volcanoes, and altitude sickness in the Andes.
  • A handful of regions carry elevated US advisories for cartel-related violence — these are specific states/areas, not whole countries.

Seasonal & weather risk

Atlantic hurricane season runs June–November (peak Aug–Oct) across the Caribbean, Gulf, and US East Coast. The Andes and Southern Cone reverse the northern calendar — plan Patagonia for the Nov–March summer.

Getting around safely

App-based ride-hail (where legal and established) is usually safer than street taxis in Latin America. US/Canada intercity travel leans on driving and domestic flights. Long-distance buses in South America are excellent but choose reputable lines and overnight cama services carefully.

Health & medical access

Altitude (Cusco, La Paz, Quito) needs acclimatization. Dengue and Zika circulate in tropical zones. US healthcare is excellent but extremely expensive without insurance — travel-medical cover is essential for visitors.

This is a regional overview. Risk varies sharply by country and city — open any country below for its live US State Department advisory, GDACS disaster alerts, CDC health notices, and city-level files. Always verify against your own government’s advisory before you travel.

How to use this page

  • Quality column — a 0–100 score derived from the depth of editorial data we have for that country (baseline scores, emergency numbers, reviewed cities, recent demand, content depth).
  • Index status — valid canonical country pages are indexable. A blocked/noindex row identifies a duplicate, withdrawn record, or redirect source that should not compete with its canonical URL.
  • Demand — anonymized search counts on Travel Risk Calculator over the last 30 days. High-demand low-quality countries are our enrichment priorities.
  • Review status and quality score prioritize improvements; neither is used to hide a legitimate canonical destination.
