What this site is

Travel Risk Calculator helps ordinary travelers answer one question quickly and honestly: "Is this destination safe for me, right now?" For any city or country we combine a curated safety baseline with live public-source intelligence and produce a single composite score from 0–100, the specific risk categories driving it, and a short list of things to actually do before and during the trip.

It is built for civilians — tourists, expats, digital nomads, families, journalists, and people on the move who need a fast, readable second opinion alongside their own government's advisory. There is no signup, no paywall, and no data selling. The tool is free to use and supported by advertising.

How we score a destination

Every assessment is built from two clearly-separated layers, and we label which is which on every page:

• A curated baseline. For each place we hold an editorial estimate across nine risk categories — crime, health, government advisory, political stability, natural disasters, transport, environmental quality, digital security, and money safety. These estimates are informed by public references such as government travel advisories, Numbeo crime indices, the Global Peace Index, and WHO/CDC health context. They are estimates, reviewed periodically, with a confidence level shown on every page.
• Live public-source conditions. Layered on top in real time: today's weather and air quality (Open-Meteo), the latest US State Department travel advisory, GDACS natural-disaster alerts, CDC Travelers' Health notices, and recent news headlines (Google News). These come straight from the source and are shown verbatim with a timestamp and a link back to the original.

The composite is a transparent weighted sum of the nine categories. The full weighting and tier thresholds are published on our methodology page, and every page lists exactly which sources fed it on our data sources registry.

Our editorial standards

We try hard to be honest about the limits of what we know. That commitment shows up in concrete ways:

• We separate fact from estimate. Live, sourced data is always labeled as such and timestamped. Baseline scores are always labeled as editorial estimates with a confidence figure.
• AI is used for synthesis, not invention. Where an AI summary appears, it is constrained to summarize only the live public-source data already on the page — it is never asked to invent facts, statistics, or quotes. Every AI summary is labeled and dated. See our AI content policy.
• We show our work. Each city and country page carries a public score-history log, a "what we don't have" section, and a one-click corrections link. Our full editorial policy and data review process are published.
• We never claim to replace official guidance. A risk score is a planning aid. Government advisories, your insurer, and local emergency services are always the authority — we link to them rather than around them.

Who runs this

Travel Risk Calculator is an independently operated project, built and maintained by a small team that handles the data engineering, editorial review, and scoring methodology. We are not affiliated with any government, insurer, security firm, or tour operator, and we accept no payment to raise or lower any destination's score. Our only revenue is advertising, kept clearly separated from editorial content.

Editorial responsibility sits with the Travel Risk Calculator Editorial Team, which sets the scoring framework, reviews baseline estimates, and signs off on the trust pages linked throughout the site.

How the site is funded

The tool is free because it is supported by display advertising. Advertising is the only way we monetize the site. We do not sell personal data, we do not run sponsored scores, and advertising never influences a destination's risk assessment.
