Advertising

Travel Risk Calculator is free to use, no signup, no paywall. To keep the lights on we plan to run a small number of display ads through Google AdSense. This page documents where ads do and do not appear, what ad networks we accept, and how editorial independence is preserved.

Ad networks we plan to use

Initial plan: Google AdSense only. We may add other networks (Mediavine, Ezoic, direct-sold) once traffic justifies it. Any new network will be disclosed on this page before it goes live, and added to /ads.txt.

We do not accept advertising from:

  • tourism boards, hotel groups, or destination-marketing organizations — they have a conflict of interest with neutral safety scoring;
  • "travel insurance" lead-generators that misrepresent coverage;
  • governments, embassies, or quasi-government tourism agencies;
  • visa/passport "expediter" services that operate in legal grey zones;
  • anything offering to "remove" or "lower" a city's threat score in exchange for payment. We will not do that for any sum.

Where ads appear

If and when AdSense is approved, ads will appear in clearly bounded slots on:

  • the home page, below the fold;
  • the methodology, safety tips, and editorial-hub pages;
  • destination index and country pages;
  • the bottom third of city pages, below the score and live-data sections.

Where ads will never appear

These positions are permanently off-limits, regardless of ad-network rules:

  • Emergency-numbers blocks. No ads near 112, 911, 999, or country-specific emergency contacts.
  • Active disaster alerts. No ads on or adjacent to GDACS alerts, CDC outbreak notices, or US State Department warnings.
  • Medical-access information. No ads near hospital lists, embassy clinics, or evacuation guidance.
  • Crisis/incident pages. No ads during evolving events (terror, civil unrest, major disaster).
  • The composite-score dial and "What should I do now?" block. Both are core safety guidance and stay ad-free.
  • The contact, correction, and feedback forms.

Format constraints

  • No sticky/persistent ads or interstitials (pop-ups that block content) at any point.
  • No autoplay video or audio ads.
  • No prestitial ads (full-page ad before content loads).
  • No anchor ads on mobile.
  • No more than 3 ad units per page total during AdSense review.

Editorial firewall

Advertisers do not see what we are about to publish. We do not preview content with sponsors. The threat-score baselines and AI briefings are not modifiable on the basis of an advertiser relationship. If an advertiser is unhappy with how their region or business is portrayed, the appropriate channel is a Correction with evidence — not a request to suppress the content.

What you'll see

Ads — when present — will be clearly distinguishable from editorial content, labeled per AdSense policy, and never made to look like our own recommendations. Sponsored content (if we ever publish any) will carry a visible "Sponsored" label.

Consent for personalized ads

If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another region with personalized-advertising consent requirements, you'll see a consent management interface before any personalized ads are served. You can decline personalized ads without losing access to any feature of the site.

Google partner disclosure

If we serve Google AdSense ads, Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this and other websites. See how Google uses cookies in advertising for full detail. You can opt out at Google Ads Settings.

ads.txt

Our authorized digital sellers list is at /ads.txt. It will be empty during AdSense review and populated once approved.

Reporting an ad problem

If you see an ad on this site that is misleading, malicious, inappropriate, or appears in a position listed above as off-limits, please report it via /contact with category "Ad problem". Include the page URL and a screenshot if possible.
